Pakistan Seeks Trade with Iran

ISLAMABAD, Feb 4: National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza held a meeting with Speaker of the Iranian Majlis-i-Shoora Dr Ali Larijani in Tehran on Thursday and discussed with him bilateral matters, particularly the need to remove impediments to trade and implement the Preferential Trade Agreement.

The meeting called for more frequent contacts between parliamentarians and business representatives and visa facilitation for businessmen of the two countries.

Dr Fehmida emphasised the need for greater cooperation in energy, electricity, transport and communication sectors for mutual benefits. She said that Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project should be completed early to meet the energy requirement of Pakistan.

The Speaker, who arrived in Tehran on Wednesday on a six-day visit, said that there should be increased contacts between political leaders and women parliamentarians of Pakistan and Iran.

She highlighted Pakistan government’s efforts against extremism and terrorism and said that Pakistan was fighting against terrorists to secure the region and the world.

Dr Fehmida told her Iranian counterpart that Pakistan’s parliament had passed unanimous resolutions that seek to curb terrorism and extremism.

Dr Larijani appreciated the role of Pakistan and assured the Speaker of Iran’s support to Pakistan’s efforts in this regard.

Dr Fehmida apprised him about the functioning of the National Assembly and its standing committees.

The two sides emphasised the need for bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan.—APP
